Calvary Grows! Community GardenVolunteer OpportunitiesStaying informed Larry has started an e-mail distribution list. If you're on e-mail, letting us know that you'd like to be added to the distribution list will keep you informed of upcoming events related to the garden. Helping on work days We will have work days in the Spring and Fall and at other times as needed during the growing season to build or prepare beds for planting, plant the garden, maintain the area, and clean up after plants have finished producing. You don't have to be a "garden expert". If you can handle a shovel, dig a hole, handle a drill or hammer, etc., you're "qualified" for garden work days. Volunteering to help on work days does not commit you to show up every time! Donating supplies People have donated such things as books on gardening, recycled empty yogurt cups for growing seedlings (though Yoplait cups don't work well), watering cans, garden fabric, and compost. In addition to these, here are some other ideas for things that people might donate, though there may not be a limit to our imagination:
Publicity Please let us know if you have ideas for ways in which we might get the word out or if you would have time to help us publicize the garden, particularly in the neighborhood around the church. We'd be particularly interested in ideas for ways we can get the word out to involve children and families. Planning In any ministry, things don't "just happen." God (for whatever reason) has chosen to work through people and has given each of us gifts for ministry. Some of the planning work that is needed in the Calvary Grows! garden ministry includes planning how we will use the garden space (including future expansion of the space), fundraising (yes, that too!), and let's not forget planning of celebrations, such as a garden dedication/worship service or a "Harvest Festival." (Gardening ought to be fun and an enrichment of body, soul, and spirit!) Got other ideas? Let us know. (See the main garden page for contact information.) |
