We know visiting a new church can feel a little daunting, so we thought we’d list some FAQ’s to give you an idea of what you can expect upon visiting Calvary. If we don’t answer your questions here, please contact us.

When do we start?

Our worship service begins at 11:00AM on Sunday mornings and typically lasts about an hour. When you enter the sanctuary you’ll be welcomed by one of our members and given a bulletin that outlines the service.

There will be coffee and snacks in the front of the church building, so you’ll probably find most people gathering there before the service starts.

We begin our service with a prelude, a welcome, call to worship, and a few hymns. After singing and praying together a member of the church will read our Scripture texts for the day. Our readings come from the Revised Common Lectionary, which follows the church’s liturgical calendar. We sing another hymn before the gospel reading and then a sermon is preached (usually ten minutes long).

After the sermon, the choir will sing an anthem and then the congregation will take a moment to pray with and for one another–we welcome all to share in this time. We then move into a Confession, followed by Passing of the Peace. After we offer one another signs of peace, we stand in a circle and say the Lord’s Prayer together.

Our service culminates in our celebration of communion. We are an Open Table community, which means all are welcome to share in the meal. Following communion we sing one final hymn and receive a benediction. This marks the close of the service.

Prayer is our humble answer to the inconceivable surprise of living.

Where do I park?

We have two parking lots, one across the street from our Sanctuary on the corner of E. Trinity Ave. and Elizabeth St, and the other is to the left of our Education Building (the brick building to the left of the sanctuary). You can also park on the street–park wherever is most convenient for you!

Is childcare available?

First, please know that children of all ages are welcome to participate in worship with us. That said, at the moment we don’t offer childcare. We will do our best to accommodate your needs so that you and your family can worship with us.

How should I dress?

However you want! Most of our congregation dresses on the casual side, but others prefer more formal attire. Come as you are.

Do i need to be a Methodist

to attend or take communion?

No! While some of our members have worshipped in United Methodist churches for sometime, others have not. Still others have no religious background whatsoever. We welcome all, regardless of where you are on your spiritual journey.

What is a reconciling

In the United Methodist Church, a reconciling congregation refers to a church that advocates for the full-inclusion of LGBTQ persons into the life of the church. We joyfully welcome and affirm LGBTQ persons to serve at all levels of church leadership, and we celebrate the sexuality and spirituality of same and opposite gender loving persons. Calvary UMC is the first reconciling congregation in the Carolinas.

More info about Reconciling Congregations can be found here.
